Saturday, July 1 ~ Praying to understand Jesus’ “I go”

John 14:1-3

Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back. Then I will take you with me, so that you can be where I am.”

Every human being needs to hear this and “trust” it.  When Jesus says, “I go” he is describing his death.  You could add a thousand words and not say more.  When we die, we just “go.”  Where?  How?  What’s it like?  What happens next?  No living person knows.  But Jesus knew.  When Jesus died, he had work to do: “to prepare a place.”  He couldn’t tell us much more about that “place” either, except it’s where we can be “with me.”  Such a sad, terrible, lonely moment, so full of ultimate hope and love.

Lord, I pray longingly for all the dear people in my life who have said, “I go.”  I desperately want them back, but I guess they want me forward.  Teach my heart to trust in what you have said in the mean time.  Amen.
