So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to accept and obey my teaching, you are really my followers. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
Jesus is telling me the truth. But do I know it yet? If I’m not free, I guess not. Jesus spent three years constantly telling the truth to people. He told Mary Magdalene the truth about her former life. He told Matthew the truth about the life of being a Roman tax collector. He had to tell Peter the truth about himself over and over again. He tried to tell “the rich young ruler,” his home town and the Pharisee leaders the truth, but they refused to listen. Now, with the words of Scripture and the subtle nudgings of the Holy Spirit, Jesus continues the ministry of truth-telling. Am I listening? Am I hearing? Am I putting it into practice — “accept and obey” — right now? The complete freedom of Jesus awaits me whenever and however I do.
Lord, please forgive and demolish all the little jails I have built for myself. Like popularity and envy and lust and acquisitiveness. Thank you for opening all my prison doors. Now I need to walk out and be free. Walk with me. Amen.
